The salaries of all faculty members except for those with Above Scale status include a rank/step scale component that is determined by the relevant UC pay scale approved each year by the UC President. The salaries of many faculty members also include a “decoupled” component, a fixed increment that is retained over time. Berkeley currently sets salaries at the time of recruitment. Salaries may be increased in several ways:
- Faculty are advanced in rank/step by progression on the academic ladder
- Range adjustments to the rank/step scales are authorized by the UC President
- Changes in decoupling may be provided by a campus program or through a response to an outside offer.
A Faculty Salary Equity Study Report was released in January 2015. This study marks the beginning of a new era of thoughtful engagement with issues of faculty salary equity at Berkeley. It will serve as a basis for fostering sustained and collective discussion and action.
