I bring extensive experience mentoring students and faculty across career stages, leading an academic department, and building interdisciplinary research communities. My advising attends to the concrete intellectual and institutional conditions faculty confront, whether they are developing a research agenda, navigating departmental relationships, managing uneven service demands, or deciding how their scholarship and teaching can sustain a meaningful professional life.

Jovan Scott Lewis is Professor of Geography and holds the Haas Distinguished Chair in Economic Disparities at UC Berkeley. He chaired the Geography Department from 2021 to 2025. His research examines race, political economy, and the institutional production of inequality, with particular attention to Black communities in the United States and the Caribbean, and he is the author of Scammer’s Yard,Violent Utopia, and co-edited The Black Geographic
